Ghost Bikes.net: A Crash is No Accident
When you see this sign, remember to look for bicyclists on the road...to follow the rules of the road whether on bike, foot, or motor vehicle...and to be ready to react to the mistakes of other road users. A crash is no accident...crashes can be prevented. No one else has to die.
Safety Tips and Resources Safety Graphic Ghostbikes in other communities Jessica Bullen Memorial Fund StreetShare Campaign Ordering yard signs or stickers

No one has to die on a bicycle. But they do.

Contrary to popular belief, bicycling is not inherently dangerous, especially when everyone follows the rules of the road. What’s dangerous are the often-illegal interactions that occur between bicyclists and motorists every day, increasing the danger for everyone. If everyone followed existing laws more carefully, we would all be able to share the road safely.

Unfortunately, when car meets bike in a collison, it is almost always the bicycle that loses. At motor vehicle speeds above 35 mph, the result is often a bicyclist fatality. Even if the bicyclist does not die, they may suffer life-altering injuries.

We are all responsible for traffic fatalities when we drive a car or bicycle carelessly or lawlessly. Don't think it could happen to you? How often do you "zone out" while driving? How often does a motorist who has just hit a bicyclist say "I didn't see the bicycle"? Did they not see? Or were they not looking...not paying attention.

The Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin Ghost Bike Campaign is meant, not to frighten people away from riding bicycles, but to draw attention to the simple fact that, if motorists and bicyclists both pay closer attention to what they are doing...and follow the rules of the road...no one has to die on a bicycle.

A crash is no accident...a crash can be prevented.

When you see these signs, remember to look for bicyclists. Remember to follow the rules of the road (on bicycle OR in a car). Remember to be prepared to react to the mistakes of other road users.

And remember...no one else has to die.

What can YOU do?

1. Follow all traffic laws, whether you are driving a car or riding a bicycle.

2. When you are driving a car...look out for bicyclists as a matter of course.

-Be especially careful when you are making a turn. Bicycles usually drive to the right of cars and it is lawful for them to pass you on the right if there is room to safely do so...so be careful not to cut them off when making right turns. Use the same care in watching for on-coming bicycles when you are making a left turn across traffic.

-Be aware of bicycles at night, especially on poorly lit rural roads.

3. Be ready for other road users to make mistakes and be ready to react to them...being in the right doesn't mean anything if it either costs you your life or causes you to inadvertantly take the life of another.

4. Small children on bicycles are particularly unpredictable. Watch for children on the sidewalk when you enter or leave a driveway AND for children darting out into the street from driveways or from behind parked cars or bushes. Kids don't know or understand the law, so be very careful in any situation where children may be present on foot or on bike. Teach your own kids about the dangers of traffic.

5. Don't drink and drive...don't drink and bike.

6. Give to the Jessica Bullen Memorial Fund. Proceed from the fund go towards educating motorists and helping to assure that our public roads are safe for all users.

7. Pass the word on...crashes are NOT accidents...no one else has to die.

BFW plans to run Ghostbike promotions in cities across Wisconsin, if you think you're community is a good candidate, contact Chuck at chuck@bfw.org or 608-251-4456. Please note that the program is very volunteer intensive and would require significant local participation.

Ghostbike projects are happening throughout the country, for other examples visit these links:
